Exhausting a place in Lincoln

In the style of the Perec reading, here is what I can see sat by a computer in the university library.

Blinds (half open)

Red lights (luminous)

Tall buildings

Computers

Man (around 20), headphones in

A book, red

A fan, white, not on

A cup, branded costa

A wrapper, white

Wires

Books, scattered

Two young women, stressed over deadlines by a computer

This helped me become more aware of my surroundings even in a place as mundane as a library.

Project proposal form

Which of the words given in the brief document have you selected, and why?
I have decided to choose the word synchronicity to work with for my independent project. I chose this word because not only can I discuss the synchronicity which we experience every day, but the synchronicity we do not think about and which is seen as being the norm of everyday life.

What do you want to point your camera at?
My initial idea was to go to places in which people/cars start and stop on a long exposure to make the images ghost-like. One of these places was a train tracks where people stop hen the barriers go down and also traffic lights. I have not found my specific locations yet but will do with more research of surrounding areas.

Why are you interested in this subject?
This type of photography take out of context the daily lives of each individual and creates one body of movement instead of separating each person. This rejects people’s individuality and instead creates an image in which we assume everyone is on their way to work by the constant flow of people in a time where it is extremely busy.

What do you hope an audience will take from your images?
I hope my audience will take the message of a uniform society and culture, where we no longer express individuality of identity in our daily lives. I hope to also express that everyone is consumed into the working life, conforming to social norms without even realising.

What areas of research are you considering to help deepen your understanding of the subject you have chosen?
I am looking at parallels and synchronicity of movement and behaviour. Therefore I will be looking at certain movement photographers and practitioners and take ideas/inspiration from their work.

What practitioner(s) or visual resources would you consider to have influenced you? This not have to be photographic.
I looked at a lot of Alexey Titarenkoa’s work and was inspired by his use of movement within his photos. I also looked at Gjon Mili’s photos which really focusses on movement and electricity. I regularly look at photos on Pinterest to expand my ideas and to show different photographers I wouldn’t regularly look at.

What support or equipment might you need to achieve your goals?
I will be needing advise from my photography tutor as I am attempting something I have never done before so will need some guidance in the process. I will be needing a good quality camera and a stable tripod to create these photos and a lot of time for each photo to create the movement within it.

Photography image number 5

5-292x300

My interpretation of this image is that this is a small boy in the 1950’s/60’s (time zone chosen because of the style of pram in the background and what the lady on the far right is wearing).

However, after looking at this image for longer I have began to question whether this child is a young girl, which would make the image more shocking as we stereotypically expect boys to be interested/play with grenades and generally play with toys orientated around violence.

This photograph could have been taken in a number of places: America and England firstly pop into mind.

America: As it looks like Central Park with the trees and greenery, and has been a country effected by war.

England: as it is a country which has been effected by war, paired with the woman’s outfit in the background which looks traditionally British.

Both of these ideas were because both countries have been affected by conflict of war and with this paired with the clothing of the young boy it fits within my time period choice. Furthermore the positioning of the child’s hand (without the grenade) expresses anger and threat to the image/viewer which juxtaposes with the innocence of a child making it seem more threatening. This is all highlighted through the fact that the focus of the image is on the young boy, with the background being blurry and somewhat overexposed.

Looking at this image I question whether the child was asked to pull a silly face or whether this child was found this angry and wanted to express their anger through this image. As the child is looking directly at the camera we can assume the photographer engaged with him/her and the child was told to look directly at the camera.

The photographer here wants the viewer to believe that this child was affected by war, which therefore led to children possibly playing with bombs and starving (hence the child being extremely skinny). This brings into mind a question of the affects of war on young children and malnutrition. We also question whether this child is alone, as the closest adult around is the slender figure behind him/her. Therefore we feel sorry for this child and want to help.
